Synopsis

A brilliant debut mystery in a classic vein: Detective Cormoran Strike investigates a supermodel's suicide.

After losing his leg to a land mine in Afghanistan, Cormoran Strike is barely scraping by as a private investigator. Strike is down to one client, and creditors are calling. He has also just broken up with his longtime girlfriend and is living in his office.

Then John Bristow walks through his door with an amazing story: His sister, thelegendary supermodel Lula Landry, known to her friends as the Cuckoo, famously fell to her death a few months earlier. The police ruled it a suicide, but John refuses to believe that. The case plunges Strike into the world of multimillionaire beauties, rock-star boyfriends, and desperate designers, and it introduces him to every variety of pleasure, enticement, seduction, and delusion known to man.

You may think you know detectives, but you've never met one quite like Strike. You may think you know about the wealthy and famous, but you've never seen them under an investigation like this.

Introducing Cormoran Strike, this is the acclaimed first crime novel by J.K. Rowling, writing under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith.

I rarely write a review but this was a most enjoyable book. It's takes me back to my first crime fiction books 30 years ago. A great job JK. Keep it up.

A good read! Good character development. Excellent plot development with a bit of her usual sense of humor that is the only connection to her previous series.

The Cuckoos Calling
September 26th, 2014
This book had been in my library for a long time. So long in fact that I didn't recall anything about the story line and especially not the identity of the real author. I buy a lot of discounted books by obscure authors, mist of which are really quite good so I assumed this was one if those as I was swept up in the fast paced action of this book which made it impossible to put down. The ending where everything was revealed was so mind blowing I kept thinking to myself what an amazing author this was and couldn't believe "he" wasn't a household name. Wasn't until I got to the very end when they revealed that the author was a pseudonym for JK Rowling that it came to me and that upon learning she had penned a book under these circumstances I must have purchased it and then forgotten about it as I'd been busy and hadn't read, I'm ashamed to say, for about six months. I just randomly chose it from a bunch of books I knew nothing about and dug in for a wild ride. So I consider myself double blessed. Not only did I get a fantastic read but a big chuckle at the end. Although I bought the book after the authors true identity had been revealed, my poor memory proved to be a blessing as I got to experience the same surprise that initial readers did. JK is truly one if the best authors of our time and this book is a work of genius!!! Kudos!!!

Three chapters in
April 13th, 2014
As the title says I'm three chapters in and well and truly hooked. I'd initially downloaded the 'taster' of the book and then, of course, had to purchase the book immediately. Now I find myself unable to turn off my bedside lamp due to the fact that I just HAVE to know what happens in the next paragraph etc, etc, etc. The author brings to life a full dimensional aspect of all the characters in the book to such a point that you can almost smell and touch them.
