Synopsis

From Michael Ondaatje: an electrifying new novel, by turns thrilling and deeply moving -- one of his most vividly rendered and compelling works of fiction to date.

In the early 1950s, an eleven-year-old boy boards a huge liner bound for England. At mealtimes, he is placed at the lowly "Cat's Table" with an eccentric and unforgettable group of grownups and two other boys. As the ship makes its way across the Indian Ocean, through the Suez Canal, into the Mediterranean, the boys find themselves immersed in the worlds and stories of the adults around them. At night they spy on a shackled prisoner -- his crime and fate a galvanizing mystery that will haunt them forever.

Looking back from deep within adulthood, and gradually moving back and forth from the decks and holds of the ship to the years that follow the narrator unfolds a spellbinding and layered tale about the magical, often forbidden discoveries of childhood and the burdens of earned understanding, about a life-long journey that began unexpectedly with a sea voyage.

Michael Ondaatje has the most wonderful way of describing things. He paints a picture in your head and makes you want to meet his characters. A nice easy read with short chapters and a great storyline.

Engrossing, and beautifully woven together. It felt real; I too was a small boy of 11 travelling from India to England on an ocean liner, and our experiences jibe.

Not a book I would recommend
March 7th, 2014
This book just never seemed to end. There were too many subplots and I understand that it is suppose to be about memories of his trip and not current events, but it seemed jumbled to me. Not a fan.

The book started well but I lost interest in these young people. Too bad, I kept expecting more.

The Cats Table by Michael Ondaatje
December 22nd, 2013
This is one of those books that you are not sure if you liked it or not. The characters were colourful, the narrator you learnt about but the plot is still a mystery to me. It wasn't a hard read but it was certainly not one where you stop bathing to keep reading.

This novel has character, which is more than I can say of many novels that have only characters.
