Synopsis

When Barry Fairbrother dies in his early forties, the town of Pagford is left in shock.

Pagford is, seemingly, an English idyll, with a cobbled market square and an ancient abbey, but what lies behind the pretty facade is a town at war.

Rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils... Pagford is not what it first seems.

And the empty seat left by Barry on the parish council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen. Who will triumph in an election fraught with passion, duplicity and unexpected revelations?

A big novel about a small town, The Casual Vacancy is J.K. Rowling's first novel for adults. It is the work of a storyteller like no other.

Boring and depressing. If you like TV programmes such as Coronation Street you might like this otherwise don't waste your money.

JR ROWLING you have dropped in my estimation, what makes you think that a lot of foul language makes a good book. I know your children's book did you credit, why did you sink so low when writing adult fiction. I binned it early in the story. It was not at all to my taste. Very poor literature! ,!!

Really struggled to get into this
June 14th, 2014
It took probably two thirds of the book before I found any kind of connection with the characters. It just seemed to drift and lack direction in places. I had to somewhat force myself to finish this but in a way am glad that I persevered. This is one of those occasions where the plot summary promises more than the work delivers. It's not terrible by any stretch of the imagination but I just expected more from J K Rowling.

Brilliant read

Not my usual choice of novel and a little slow at the beginning. Once it gets going though it builds brilliantly through many layers and threads. The lives of the characters are depicted with so much depth it totally draws you in by the end. Definitely will be recommending it.

Slow

I found this book quite slow and felt some of the bad language was not required. The story has a tragic ending which doesn't seem to fit. I was left feeling disappointed.

A very accomplished entry into adult fiction. Engaging characters and a plot that defies your attempts to put the book down.....

Poor research
March 4th, 2014
The author clearly does not understand the functioning of parish councils or life in and the management of state secondary schools. A good enough tale but poorly researched.

Very down to earth and realistic. A very believable plot portraying people as they are, complete with all the warts.

Really enjoyed this one. A different read from my normal books. Liked the mix of characters and how you could appreciate both points of view. Nice to see some of the characters get they're comeuppance.

Ok
February 2nd, 2014
Loved the situation, the authors insight into the characters who were all complex but very believable and the plot - once the book got into it's stride. However I think that it could have benefitted from a little editing as especially in the early stages it feels a laborious read. Stick with it though and you will be rewarded.

This was a brilliant book although I thought some of the sexually graphic scenes were unnecessary and did not add to or enhance the story. It was however a fantastic read and I was unable to put the book down.

A weird book but couldn't put it down! Can't say I liked it but had to keep reading so maybe that means I did like it??? A lot of characters to get to grips with initially but did get to know one from another eventually. JK has quite an imagination!!! Very talented lady.
