Synopsis

The short story that inspired Jennifer Weiner’s forthcoming novel The Next Best Thing.

Ruth has left her job writing for a hit television show for reasons she’d rather not discuss and is supplementing her increasingly dwindling savings with freelance writing projects—namely, helping anxious high school students craft a perfect college essay and lonely souls craft captivating online dating profiles. When she’s not working, she’s swimming—lap after lap at the local indoor pool, in a desperate attempt to wash away the sting of professional failure and heartbreak that she can’t seem to shake. It takes an unexpected client to show her that appearances can be deceiving, and that sometimes the bravest thing you can do is simply dive back in.

A warm, pleasant read
July 13th, 2014
The story is just fine, predictable but there is an earnest meticulous care in crafting the characters that it almost could be a great read.

I love this author! This was my intriguing start to what will be a fun and absorbing adventure with a talented author. Her ability to develope a set of characters, and wind you up in their story, is magical. Welcome to the world of Jennifer Weiner...

Great prequel
September 16th, 2013
Swim is the quick-read prequel to The Next Best Thing. Interesting concept about a girl who deals with "issues" by swimming instead of food or drugs. Touching story about a girl who was disfigured as a child in a car accident that killed her parents. Great start to a promising story. Recommended!

I would've liked an actual ending.
July 1st, 2013
I expected this book to be a romance or just a good book. It only made me sad and didn't even have an good or bad ending since there seemed to be no ending written up at all. There's another book that has to do with this but I didn't bother reading it.
