Synopsis

When he was nine, he watched as his mother and brother were killed before him. At thirteen, he led a band of bloodthirsty thugs. By fifteen, he intends to be king…

It’s time for Prince Honorous Jorg Ancrath to return to the castle he turned his back on, to take what’s rightfully his. Since the day he hung pinned on the thorns of a briar patch and watched Count Renar’s men slaughter his mother and young brother, Jorg has been driven to vent his rage. Life and death are no more than a game to him—and he has nothing left to lose. But treachery awaits him in his father’s castle. Treachery and dark magic. No matter how fierce his will, can one young man conquer enemies with power beyond his imagining?

Refreshingly sinister take on a self made hero

Wittily written dialog and events make this a pretty exciting, albeit really disturbing, bit if writing. Definitely enjoyed this enough to continue with the series. If you don't mind following the darker side of conquest this is a good read.

Prince of Thorns

Very well written. Loved the hidden twists that come into view as you continue reading. So far this series is up there with The DragonRiders of Pern or The Kingkiller Chronicles.

Prince of Thorns

An interesting novel of dark and dangerous times long gone or yet to come. I believe Mark Lawrence has blended dark magic, dark times, vengence and betrayal into a believable tale of what might have been and of what is to come.

This is an excellent book, protagonist is a complete a***hole but you can't help but love him... Dark fantasy at it's best... Recommend the other books in the series too

A little disjointed

Interesting take on the genre. Somewhat disjointed in its use of real world history versus setting up the fantasy world. Perhaps trying to be a bit clever and coming off as not quite fluid or believable.

Can't say I liked this book but can't say I didn't like it either. At any rate, I'm now curious to see how Jorg fairs and if he becomes Emperor.....

Well written. The anti-hero protagonist wins you over despite his deeds, and the reality of war is shown clearly throughout. Excellent read!

It's an amazingly well written book, sprinkled liberally with snarky witticism. It's a joy to read.
