Synopsis

Pride and Prejudice is a novel by Jane Austen, first published in 1813. The story follows the main character Elizabeth Bennet as she deals with issues of manners, upbringing, morality, education, and marriage in the society of the landed gentry of early 19th-century England. Elizabeth is the second of five daughters of a country gentleman living near the fictional town of Meryton in Hertfordshire, near London. Though the story is set at the turn of the 19th century, it retains a fascination for modern readers, continuing near the top of lists of 'most loved books' such as The Big Read. It has become one of the most popular novels in English literature and receives considerable attention from literary scholars. Modern interest in the book has resulted in a number of dramatic adaptations and an abundance of novels and stories imitating Austen's memorable characters or themes. To date, the book has sold some 20 million copies worldwide. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pride_and_prejudice

It is such a great book. Anyone who has not read this book has not been educated. It is unfortunate that it is not on the BBC book list.

Classic for a reason
April 30th, 2015
I first read Pride & Prejudice because I had seen the Colin Firth version on TV. I was delighted with how well Jane Austen understood human nature & how she used comedy to deal with unpleasant characters. I'm sure I've read the book at least a dozen times since & enjoy it as much each time I read it. That sets me off to read Jane's other books, which I also thoroughly enjoy.

This is one of my favorite romantic novels. It's not so obvious as books today would be, but rather has a depth and subtlety that touches the heart. Once you get accustomed to the language and the mentality, it's fun and witty.

This enthralling tale of love, proposals and rejections will keep you entertained for hours. The language might be a bit hard to understand and you might even have to read some parts twice to understand but it is DEFINITELY worth reading. Enjoy!

Master piece

One of the best female writers ever and one of the best romance novels ever writen. This particular version is slightly difficult to read and in any case it's basically something to read calmly and with time, not to mention stories like this deserve that little extra depending on the weather; a cool beverage, a cup of cocoa or perhaps a bowl of snacks. This is really something to enjoy.

One of my all time favorite books. I love the characters and the language used. While set in and written in a very different period from ours it has a modern and contemporary story that spans the generations.

I have read this book more than any other book I've ever read, first time in 1994, and everytime I start I can't put it down. I read it at least once every year and still enjoy it. Excellent work by Jane Austen.

I love to read the authentic speech of the day. Isn't it fun and a little endearing as the attitudes of the Victorians are revealed to our 21st century mindset.

A true classic and a must for readers of 19th century literature. The storyline gives a real insight into the social fabric of the era applicable to the more genteel classes.

I thought it would be difficult to read... But as you carry on reading, it gets a lot easier, and before you know it, you won't be able to put it down! This defiantly is right up there among the greatest works of English Literature.
