Synopsis

This is a companion book to Ireland 1800-1920 and follows Pre-Famine Ireland: Social Structure. In Irish nationalist mythology Ireland was invariably depicted as oppressed and with its industries retarded. A point-by-point analysis of the whole of Irish society including political ideas rebuts this picture. It investigates the allegations that Ireland was a down-trodden country held in subjection by the British. It examines whether the violent political struggles were genuine struggles for independence or simply terrorist campaigns to control the rackets. The failure of the separatists to devise a convincing ideology to unite all Irish people behind them is described (98 words)
