Synopsis

In a mega-stakes, high-suspense race against time, three of the most unlikely and winning heroes Stephen King has ever created try to stop a lone killer from blowing up thousands.

In the frigid pre-dawn hours, in a distressed Midwestern city, hundreds of desperate unemployed folks are lined up for a spot at a job fair. Without warning, a lone driver plows through the crowd in a stolen Mercedes, running over the innocent, backing up, and charging again. Eight people are killed; fifteen are wounded. The killer escapes.

In another part of town, months later, a retired cop named Bill Hodges is still haunted by the unsolved crime. When he gets a crazed letter from someone who self-identifies as the “perk” and threatens an even more diabolical attack, Hodges wakes up from his depressed and vacant retirement, hell-bent on preventing another tragedy.

Brady Hartsfield lives with his alcoholic mother in the house where he was born. He loved the feel of death under the wheels of the Mercedes, and he wants that rush again. Only Bill Hodges, with a couple of highly unlikely allies, can apprehend the killer before he strikes again. And they have no time to lose, because Brady’s next mission, if it succeeds, will kill or maim thousands.

Mr. Mercedes is a war between good and evil, from the master of suspense whose insight into the mind of this obsessed, insane killer is chilling and unforgettable.

This book was not your normal Stephen King novel in the real horror setting. Instead it's an excellent murder mystery. And it was thoroughly enjoyable. Kudos to Mr. King, again!!

"Meet Brady, Mr. Mercedes"
March 9th, 2015
King is synonymous with horror, although his more recent works don't all live up to that title. Take, if you will, 11/22/63, which was a story about travelling back in time to prevent the assassination of John F. Kennedy. The plot sounds mediocre at face value but, with the stellar storytelling skills and charisma of Stephen King, he has woven a compelling tale that not only leaves the reader feeling excited, but instils a feeling of care and sympathy towards JFK. Being someone who opposes historical fiction as a general rule, 11/22/63 delivered a stellar tale that I was not expecting and left me caring deeply about what happened on November 22, 1963. Take also, for example, his story Joyland, the one about the young guy who gets a job at an amusement park. Published by Hard Case Crime, this was a naturally shorter book than most of his recent offerings, but had the ending that left me in tears and wanting more of the story. Mr. Mercedes, being the first in a trilogy with the sequel (Finders Keepers) being released this June, also doesn't fit into the Horror category. This is a crime novel with one major twist that makes it so special and entertaining: it's no mystery who the killer is. Before the book was even released, the public knew the name of the man who used the pseudonym of The Mercedes Killer. It even gives you some intimate glances into his life, giving you a very charged-up, never-ending roller-coaster of a novel, throwing punches and curves whenever it possibly can. It warrants a re-read, and it's a terrific book if you're looking to pass the time with some "stellar fiction," as I like to consider his body of work.

Hard boiled detective goodnes.

I like when an author goes out of his comfort zone and known genre and tackles a new idea. I believe Mr. King has done a great job with this book. A great crime, thriller and detective story. I am looking forward to Finders Keepers.

Very Good, Worth Re-Reading
January 31st, 2015
A lot of people on here are saying that it's "not typical King," but I beg to differ. I mean, it's not the straightfoward horror that he is known for in such tales as Pet Sematary, IT, or perhaps The Shining, but it's still a really good tale. King has been branching off in the last few years, so it is a typical direction for him to take, in my opinion. This is a really good detective story, and I don't generally like detective stories. A unique aspect of this story is that it gives us the full identity of the killer right from the get-go, giving the reader an advantage that none of the characters have. It is something I've never seen before in a story, something I really enjoyed and would love to see again. I can't wait for his sequel, Finders Keepers, which is out in June of 2015.

Typical, Stephen King.

This novel is as good as it gets. I thought I would grow bored, was I wrong....unlike many of King's novels, their are hero's. I have to say, King captured these hero's in the true sense of the word.

A book not soon forgotten

Definitely a book I am glad I read and had some characters that were well defined that you could emphasize with both good and bad. Stephen King fans will eat this up but not a book like The Stand or The Shining.
