Amber Pascoe's ordered life is about to take a king hit. Daniel Brodie, who she had never expected to see again, is back in the country and his reason for being there is Amber herself. And though she has no wish to see him, Daniel is not taking `No' for an answer.
Although Amber has her own questions, she is reluctant to ask them as to do so might give her answers she does not wish to hear. She is safer not knowing, she tells herself. Her life is active and good, she has a lovely home, a thriving business, friends and family who love her, and she lacks for nothing. She is over Daniel Brodie. But the dream that wakes her frequently in the middle of the night, says otherwise.
When Daniel left, four years ago, she had been about to tell him she was carrying his child but, before she could do so, he had rocked her comfortable world by telling her coldly that he was returning to France and would not be back. Clearly the relationship was over. But why?
Since that day, Amber has developed her business, an aromatherapy clinic in Parnell that is thriving beyond expectations, she has a wonderful nanny for her son, Jamie, now three and a half years old, and people around her who care about her, even if a certain John Hadley wants more from her than she is prepared to give.
Her main fear is that Daniel has found out about Jamie and has come to claim him. Daniel is the wealthy CEO of his family-owned bank in Paris and the cost of a custody fight with him could be devastating for her. But there is no way she is about to give in. If a fight is what he is after, he can have it, even if it costs her every cent she has.
What Amber does not know is that Daniel is actually unaware of Jamie's existence. He has come for other reasons, he needs her to tell him to his face why she betrayed him with another man so that he can finally find the peace to live without her. Although he knows he reacted badly when Amber's friend, Emma, also his PA, showed him evidence of the betrayal, he wishes he had given her the opportunity to tell him why she had lied about loving him. Although it is still painful to think about he believes that hearing from Amber's own lips will at least alleviate some of the guilt he feels and allow him to move on with his life.
With Daniel is Emma, still his PA. When he told her about his planned trip to New Zealand she had panicked and knew she had to go with him to try and stop any meeting between him and Amber. Such a meeting could threaten all she had lied and schemed for and ruin any chance of bringing her ultimate goal to its rightful conclusion. Telling him her mother was ill and needed her, Daniel agreed to take her with him.
With no reason to disbelieve his highly skilled PA, Daniel is oblivious to any personal motive she may have had, years ago, in revealing Amber's unfaithfulness to him. Whilst he is aware that she would be available to him in another sense, he has no interest but continues to employ her as he values her skills as a first class PA.
Now, for Amber, the woman who had once ruined her life, is back, threatening her hard won peace-of-mind.
Emma, realising her scheming may be about to be revealed, knows she now has nothing to lose but the one thing she has always wanted – the father of Amber's child. The gloves are off – she will say and do whatever is necessary to finally destroy the woman she hates more than any other and, in so doing, win Daniel's heart for herself.
