Benjamin Drake was born in Kentucky in 1794. He became a lawyer when he moved to Ohio. He became a newspaper editor and author. Tecumseh was a Shawnee leader who organized the Confederacy of Western Indian Tribes. Tecumseh hoped that by uniting the tribes they could stop the white man from obtaining more of their lands. He hoped that the tension between the US and Britain would make the English his allies which helped to fuel the controversy that led to the War of 1812. Tecumseh was killed in this war. Drake wrote this book only 35 years after the death of Tecumseh, which gave him access to many historical facts and original sources. The author also included a brief history of the Shawnee and their famous chiefs.
