Synopsis

From master storyteller Melina Marchetta comes an exhilarating new fantasy springing from her celebrated epic, Finnikin of the Rock. Three years after the curse on Lumatere was lifted, Froi has found his home . . . or so he believes. Fiercely loyal to the Queen and Finnikin, Froi has been taken roughly and lovingly in hand by the Guard sworn to protect the royal family, and has learned to control his quick temper with a warrior's discipline. But when he is sent on a secretive mission to the kingdom of Charyn, nothing could have prepared him for what he finds in its surreal royal court. Soon he must unravel both the dark bonds of kinship and the mysteries of a half-mad princess in this barren and mysterious place. It is in Charyn that he will discover there is a song sleeping in his blood . . . and though Froi would rather not, the time has come to listen.

** spoiler alert ** Plot: 5 BRILLIANT STARS Characters: 5 OH MY GOD I LOVE THEM ALL STARS Writing: 5 MARVELOUS SPOT ON STARS Romance: 5 HEART-WRENCHING STARS Ending: 5 DAMN STARS Overall: 5 I LOVE THIS BOOK STARS  "The one who reigns must dies, at the hands of she born last And the last will make the first When the bastard twins are one And blessed be the newborn King For Charyn will be barren no more."  This was such an overwhelming, heart-wrenching, marvelous, incredible read.  Unbelievable!  From the beginning to the end this book is literally written spotlessly! I cannot thank the author, Melina Marchetta, anymore for what she has created!  I loved everything about this book! It was so much better than her previous installment of this series, Finnikin of the Rock, that it almost sounds like an insult because honestly you cannot compare the two! They are equally amazing reads! Though, I do like Froi much more in comparison to Finnikin as an overview.  For Finnikin was more of a vulnerable character, but Froi on the other hand, bends more to an alpha-male character. I find him more interesting to read about from readingFinnikin of the Rock. I was very intrigued to read about how the author, Melina Marchetta, can shape his character into someone I can adore and admire in this installment. As from the first installment Froi was not really an appealing character to read about. From what he was attempting to do to Isaboe (Evanjalin) in the Finnikin of the Rock (rape her), I really despised his character. But from reading this, I honestly am overwhelm by how the author had did such an amazing job in shaping him. From a savage boy from Sarnak who was homeless, has no family, cannot control his tempers, and spat at others faces. To a young man who is loyal to Lumatere (his home), is loved by others and can condemn his tantrums by counting numbers in his head in order to assure others safety from his savagery. To be able to witness his growing character from reading this, really marks my words of how I learned to love him so much more.  As well, to read about the Charyn Princess, Quintana, was just heart-wrenching.  I pity her up bringing, as well as the fears she had to endure.  Though her bravery and fierceness to bring hope to her kingdom, was absolutely one to admire. I cannot wait to read more about her in the final installment, "Quintana of Charyn." She is so compatible with Froi. That I am begging for a happy ending for the two. Lucian of the Monts and Phaedra of Alonso are another pair I beg for a happy ending as well.  Reading about the relationship and the character build up between the two was so much fun.  Really do not want it to go to waste!  Though I do have the sense that the author figure out something to satisfy my wants! Throughout the book I also see a little bit of a savage fairy-tale of Rapunzel swished in with a little bit of Beauty and the Beast in her characters that works perfectly well in her story.  I don't know if others see it too but it doesn't really matter, in the essence.  Moreover, every character in this book was in no more than any other words: incredibly well written. As for reading the ending of this, it literally drowned me in pools of tears.  It was one of those moments that I can hardly breathe.  I was so blown away by such an ending that I never would have thought a book can ever bring that extent of an emotion.  Author, Melina Marchetta really brings a whole new level in the world of fantasy-fiction. This is perfection! My favourite quote: "It's not that I liked you least," he croaked through his pain. "It's that I feared you most. The Reginita taught me to like you. There was a strange joy to her that lifted my spirits. But you, Quintana of Charyn, you made me love you." *Weeps* *Sobs* Still brings me to tears...
