Definitely can see the origins of the fantasy/horror genre here, a la H P Lovecraft. A bit long winded though and lacking in real plot development

The storis transit from quite interesting to merely readable to heavy and boring. The last story "sand" becomes rhetorical and pretentious.

They were an interesting group of stories to make one think about one's place in the metaphysical world but, I do believe the 4th story went on too long.

Lives up to it's title. The fourth weird tale, Sand, is horribly repetitive, long-winded and a struggle to get through. Could have been half the length and would yet have been a better evocation of the feeling of the immensity, antiquity and ancient religiosity of the Egyptian desert. May very well be a fine example of 19th century writing, but I only got through it because of sheer determination and stubbornness.
