Synopsis

Brandon Sanderson's epic fantasy trilogy overturns the expectations of readers and then goes on to tell the epic story of evil overturned in a richly imagined world. A thousand years ago evil came to the land and has ruled with an iron hand ever since. The sun shines fitfully under clouds of ash that float down endlessly from the constant eruption of volcanoes. A dark lord rules through the aristocratic families and ordinary folk are condemned to lives in servitude, sold as goods, labouring in the ash fields. But now a troublemaker has arrived and there is rumour of revolt. A revolt that depends on criminal that no-one can trust and a young girl who must master Allomancy - the magic that lies in all metals. A word of mouth success in the states the Mistborn trilogy has, this year, broken onto the New York Times Bestseller list. The time is ripe for its success to cross the Atlantic

There's always another secret
March 21st, 2015
Mistborn takes a standard dystopian universe (evil ruler, class divide, people with rare powers) and uses it to bring some interesting characters to life. There's some good internal reflection and discussion of character, as well as definite growth. The secret powers are simple/well-defined but interesting and allow for some well-described fight scenes. He tells us the whole way through that "there's always another secret" and then drills the message home with various plot twists. This book drove me to distraction when I couldn't read it at work.

Original and Engaging Fantasy
December 1st, 2014
Set in a society that is heavily oppressed by the rule of a tyrant Emperor, a group of renegade heroes and part time criminals seek to overthrow the government and take control. This story by Brandon Sanderson is really quite unique. He has developed a world that uses quite an original form of magic based on metal compounds. Other aspects of the story I enjoyed were the fantasy creatures, like Mist Wraiths and the political rivalry of the different noble houses.

This is an unusual Sci-Fi theme, very interestingly developed. Sequels to this book will be well worth reading as this one moves along quickly and rarely allows your interest to flag so I assume any sequels will also.
