I found the first third of the book very lightweight and the writing a bit naive. When I got to the part where we make contact with the aliens the story really takes off. We then romp on to what should be an exciting ending only to find a disappointing drift into a set up for book two. Nice try.

Decent for a first

Not too bad for a first try. More effort needs to go into the science. Most people with basic science would know that water is one of the least likely elements to be rare in the universe, as its made from two fairly abundant elements, hydrogen and oxygen. Jargon needs some research as well. The military, nautical and engineering jargon does not sound right. Characters could also be a bit deeper and maybe messier. I hope this helps the author write a better book :)
