Quite possibly my favorite of the Valdemar line - while the ending is sad (and goes against my love of happy endings) I can't help but love the book

Great book - better than expected!
March 2nd, 2013
Although I expected this book was to be kind of a tragedy, I think it was actually more bittersweet. There were parts that even almost brought a tear to my eye. Kalira was a hero just as much as Lan was, although she rarely got the credit (except from him, of course). Although i know her almost ridiculous lightheartedness was meant to balance out and be a foil for Lan's somber and slightly (usually justifiably) vengeful nature, it did still seem a bit over the top sometimes. Same goes for Tuck's devil-may-care treatment of going to war... but I think the description of Lavan's pyrotechnic achievements on the battlefield kind of made up for those trivial ills. And it will never cease to please me that I even have to look up a word now and then! It's with both humility and joy that I salute someone whose vocabulary and love of words is even more extensive than mine! Two thumbs up.
