Some sounds are made by putting two letters together. Mortimer the Teddy Bear plays a flute. He tells us it "begins with the letters fl." Then kids get to guess which object on the next page begins with fl, too. Fly? Slide? Flower? On every page there are letter combinations and bright glossy photos of matching objects. Mortimer teaches by using items that are familiar to children. There are photos of a train, crown, scarf and more. The Mortimer books always include a glossary/index and a list of helpful videos. Karen Bryant-Mole has written many educational books for small children. She wrote the delightful Mortimer's Fun with Words series, which received the Weekly Reader Seal of Approval. This series includes Mortimer's ABCs, Letters Make Words, Beginning Letters, Ending Letters, Rhyming Words, and Mortimer Plays I-Spy. She also wrote the companion series, Mortimer's Math. Zul Mukhida illustrates both series with his crisp glossy photographs.
