Synopsis

Beauty and the Beast (French: La Belle et la Bête) is a traditional fairy tale. The first published version of the fairy tale was a rendition by Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve, published in La jeune américaine, et les contes marins in 1740. The best-known written version was an abridgement of her work published in 1756 by Jeanne-Marie Le Prince de Beaumont, in Magasin des enfants, ou dialogues entre une sage gouvernante et plusieurs de ses élèves; an English translation appeared in 1757. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beauty_and_the_Beast

A lot shorter than expected

This felt more like an outline to a story than the full tale. I never realized the classic was like that, but I guess it is, after all, a fairy tale.

True Love, knows only Beauty!!

To those who were saying they thought Beauty's Name was Belle, Belle is French for Beautiful so technically it's the same thing. I love this Story. It is truly a story of true love.

Different from what I read as a kid. I can't remember Beauty having so many siblings. Nor Beast's mom still alive. At least he got her blessings before marrying. Not an ungrateful child, this Beast.

This short story seems true to the fairy tale, but not in sufficient complexity to keep my attention

If you are a children of the nineties like me and grew up watching the Disney movie adaption of the fairytale rather than knowing the real story you may find yourself in disbelief of how much it changes from the original to the various numbers of adaptions that have been done so far.

This version is as I remember it as a child. A merchant father(believable). Average, well liked and handsome. The Disney version of this tale made you think Belle as an odd ball and her father not acceptable in society. Depicted normal people as being being ruthless, cheats and vain. Evil even. The beginning was a flop. The enchanted castle and the beast saved the movie!
