Synopsis

From the opening line—"Captain Ahab was neither my first husband nor my last"—you will know that you are in the hands of a master storyteller and in the company of a fascinating woman hero. Inspired by a brief passage in Moby-Dick, Sena Jeter Naslund has created an enthralling and compellingly readable saga, spanning a rich, eventful, and dramatic life. At once a family drama, a romantic adventure, and a portrait of a real and loving marriage, Ahab's Wife gives new perspective on the American experience.

This P.S. edition features an extra 16 pages of insights into the book, including author interviews, recommended reading, and more.

Ahab's Wife

Lacks energy and any sense of story
January 8th, 2015
I usually finish books, even when I'm not fully invested in the story or characters, out of a sense of duty. Not so Ahab's Wife. One might say that one shouldn't write a review when one hasn't finished the book, but in my case, not finishing the book is the review. I felt like I was being taken advantage of, as a passive audience for a terribly drawn-out story with shallow characters.

Ugh.

I picked this up because I loved Naslund’s “Abundance.” Up until page 100, I was really liking “Ahab’s Wife.” The language is wonderful and creates a tone so seemingly appropriate for the time. However, Una, the main character, is a little too glorious and indomitable to be believable. And when the other characters started chiming in (like Ahab’s fire speech), I couldn’t take the over-the-top deluge anymore.
