All of us go through some form of depression at one time or another. Most of the time, we feel spontaneous reactions of sadness and unhappiness and deal with it by talking to a friend, crying or eating a box of chocolates and then we're back to our normal self again and resuming our regular life once more as if nothing just happened. There are some people, however, who cannot pass through depression so easily and get overwhelmed with all the wave of negative feelings that take battle inside them all at once. It is this kind of depression that is dangerous. Not only does it weaken a person and hinders him from living a full life but it can actually be life-threatening, causing severe feelings of despondency, dejection and thoughts of death.

Immediate counseling and medical intervention is necessary for life-threatening depression. But, simple coping techniques can really help you out of the not so desperate states of depression. Through counseling, you will be able to get to the root of whatever it is that is causing you to feel low and down in the dumps and give you a clear course of action to help yourself get back in high spirits.
