So fierce and powerful was the whirlpool that it drew the surface of the sea into the form of a great basin, slanting downward toward the center, where a big hole had been made in the ocean-a hole with walls of water that were kept in place by the rapid whirling of the air.
The boat in which Trot and Capn Bill were riding was just on the outer edge of this saucer-like slant, and the old sailor knew very well that unless he could quickly force the little craft away from the rushing current they would soon be drawn into the great black hole that yawned in the middle.
...He lit another candle for Trot to hold while they were gone and to light the Ork on his return to her, and then the old sailor got upon the Orks back, where he sat with his wooden leg sticking straight out sidewise.
...The release was so sudden that even with the creatures care for its passengers Capn Bill struck the earth with a shock that sent him rolling heel over head; but by the time Trot had slid down from her seat the old sailor-man was sitting up and looking around him with much satisfaction.
...Capn Bill and Trot decided to walk through the forest, to discover what was on the other side of it, but the Orks feet were still so sore and lumpy from walking on the rocks that the creature said he preferred to fly over the tree-tops and meet them on the other side.
