Synopsis

Now a major motion picture

A great modern classic and the prelude to THE LORD OF THE RINGS

Bilbo Baggins is a hobbit who enjoys a comfortable, unambitious life, rarely traveling any farther than his pantry or cellar. But his contentment is disturbed when the wizard Gandalf and a company of dwarves arrive on his doorstep one day to whisk him away on an adventure. They have launched a plot to raid the treasure hoard guarded by Smaug the Magnificent, a large and very dangerous dragon. Bilbo reluctantly joins their quest, unaware that on his journey to the Lonely Mountain he will encounter both a magic ring and a frightening creature known as Gollum.

“A glorious account of a magnificent adventure, filled with suspense and seasoned with a quiet humor that is irresistible . . . All those, young or old, who love a fine adventurous tale, beautifully told, will take The Hobbit to their hearts.” – New York Times Book Review

While I love the movies but I have loved the book longer. Don't pick this up expecting it to be like the movie, They added a lot to the movie that never really happened but it follows the book ok. Most of the time I hate when books I love are made into movies but the movies made me cry more than the book! Just do not try and compare the movies to the books or you will be disappointed. BEST BOOK EVER BTW....

If you love fantasy novels, this is the book to read. It's well written, a page turner and a classic. Even if you're not a Tolkien fan, both the young and not so young will enjoy Bilbo's adventure.

Great book! One should read it before watching the movie - there's so much color that's added, not that the movie isn't well done.

A great book echos in your mind long after you've read it. It also begs rereading to incorporate it's "DNA" into your thoughts. The Hobbit is such a book. It's so much more than a basic fantasy/adventure book with its religious and philosophical underpinnings that will challenge your thinking. That being said, it's a rollicking good story that can be read to your kids.

A very interesting and captivating read. It takes you into the adventure better than the 3D movie. This book is a definate keep for years to come, it has a place in my personal library shelve, amongst the Lord Of The Rings novel.

The only thing stopping this book from getting five stars is that the ending left me wanting to read more. The life of a Hobbit told in great details. Enough details to make you feel you were on the journey with them to raid the treasure.

An obvious classic, only improves with time and unlike other best sellers brought to life, is actually enhanced by being the subject of a major motion picture (or four). The brevity with which the story is written allows the reader to take in the story in one go, or over the course of months without loosing themselves in the minute details and twists, while still carrying a depth that allows The Hobbit to remain a classic for years to come.

I was first introduced to this book 35 years ago by my husband, we have both read it so many times we have had to replace it twice. The imagination of Tolkien is truly amazing, you also need to consider that when he wrote this book there was no World Wide Web or CGI to fuel his mind, it truly all came from his brain.

I completely become engrossed when I read a book and Tolkien can manage to take us to a magical place and at the same time make it feel so real. I'll admit his writing in these books makes for a difficult read. Its not because the content isn't superb, it absolutely is, but his style and sentence structure is unusual so I found myself taking longer in the reading so as not to miss anything. Loved it!!

What can you say more about this book. It will be around as the first fantasy book anyone has ever read and made lovers for the fantasy genre out of us. A most read in my mind for anyone. It has a little of everything for a reader. If you haven't read it, please do. Unlike some books out there, this is worth the money and time spent.

I last read this story in high school, and it has lost none of its charm 20 years later. My father introduced me to it. My mother taught from its pages. I will take great joy in reading it to my own children. Bilbo is, after all, a fine fellow, and I am very fond of him...
