Synopsis

Published in 1964, Silk and Insight (Kinu to Meisatsu), is one of the last major novels of Yukio Mishima to be translated into English. Besides being a good novel, as one would expect from Mishima, it stands as an excellent piece of social commentary on the transformation of Japanese business from the old paternalism--which by no means was benevolent--to a new world where labor unions were as active as any other institution in changing their image.

    Silk & Insight

Oh, the proofreader's lot is a tough one. Compared to them we translators have it easy. A translator can read some Venuti and have lofty ideals about visibility of the translator, foregrounding difference, etc. but when the proofreader wants in on the act, wants a little bit of attention, what are they to do? There's no using linguistic features only available in the target language, no proofreader's preface, the poor slave doesn't even get there name on the spine. Which is fine, because this Kobo edition reads a little like it was proof read by a machine. Great translation though.
