Let's start with what this book isn't about - The English Civil War (the title itself hints at this). It's about the Cavaliers, or rather a subsection of them. In particular Stubbs focuses on a group of interlinked writers (mostly poets) and covers their history from the reign of Charles I well into the Restoration. It's entertaining, well written, and proverbs superb context for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of the Civil War itself.
