Synopsis

The girl with no past, and no future, may be the only one who can save their lives.

Nisha was abandoned at the gates of the City of a Thousand Dolls when she was just a little girl. Now sixteen, she lives on the grounds of the isolated estate, where orphan girls apprentice as musicians, healers, courtesans, and, if the rumors are true, assassins. She makes her way as Matron's errand girl, her closest companions the mysterious cats that trail her shadow. Only when she begins a forbidden flirtation with the city's handsome young courier does she let herself imagine a life outside the walls. Until one by one, girls around her start to die.

Before she becomes the next victim, Nisha decides to uncover the secrets that surround the girls' deaths. But by getting involved, Nisha jeopardizes not only her own future in the City of a Thousand Dolls—but also her life.

    A Brilliant Fantasy Thrill Ride

When I first read the summary I thought I was in for a nice coming of age story to read leisurely. I did not think I was going to get sucked into a high stakes thrill ride mystery. I was already excited that the author had introduced a fantasy world based in the beautiful theme of Indian mythology and traditions. The themes were illustrated beautifully and painted colorful, creative and intricately woven society. I love stories that has classes that all have their own meaning so you know I ate the City's various houses and the girls, up. Centered in this beautifully constructed world is Nisha, a girl without a class to belong and an uncertain future. She finds herself in the middle of a mystery with girls from the city dying and no one to blame. Nisha has to track a killer with no help other than the cats that have watched her for years. As she delves deeper into the deaths she unearths the mysteries of home she thought she knew, the people she calls friends and family and the mysteries of her own past and heart. I love this character because ultimately she is flawed and really grows to understand how to stand and face those mistakes to make things right. I love that there was always a new layer of the story and characters to discover on every page. This is definitely a story that will keep you guessing and wanting more. I know I did and do!
