Synopsis

In New York, Walt Lawson is about to lose his girlfriend Vanessa. In Los Angeles, Raymond and Mia James are about to lose their house. Within days, none of it will matter.

When Vanessa dies of the flu, Walt is devastated. But she isn't the last. The virus quickly kills billions, reducing New York to an open grave and LA to a chaotic wilderness of violence and fires. As Raymond and Mia hole up in an abandoned mansion, where they learn to function without electricity, running water, or neighbors, Walt begins an existential walk to LA, where Vanessa had planned to move when she left him. He expects to die along the way.

Months later, a massive vessel appears above Santa Monica Bay. Walt is attacked by a crablike monstrosity in a mountain stream. The virus that ended humanity wasn't created by humans. It was inflicted from outside. The colonists who sent it are ready to finish the job--and Earth's survivors may be too few and too weak to resist.

BREAKERS is the first book in the post-apocalyptic Breakers series.

Compelling characters and a fast-moving plot made this an enjoyable read, but it did have some holes in plot development. Ends too suddenly, almost as if the author was on a quota and ran out. Still, a good read except for the end.

I really liked reading this story. It didn't end how I was expecting it too. You should give it a try and see what you think.

Modern Pulp
July 1st, 2015
Firstly, let me stress I liked this book. Robertson, unlike many others offering free epub downloads, can actually write. He is a technically proficient writer. So why did I describe it as "pulp"? The plot is a bit weak. No, it's more than weak. It drifts into silly. And Robertson knows it. The book was actually becoming quite interesting, and hooked me in...and then suddenly he drops a giant mothership into the book. What? Space Aliens? I freely admit I did not really read the book's description before downloading it, so I assumed it was a post-apocalyptic novel. So the sudden inclusion of a hovering starship over LA was extremely jarring for me. The whole book went a bit downhill for me from there. (And for the record, I am an avid SF reader). The aliens are just so incredibly, well, stupid. In fact, Robertson has one of his characters even voice that thought. If a race manages to have the technology to build a vessel to travel to other stars, and to bioengineer lethal viruses, one would imagine that they would be able to invent such things as security cameras, or door locks. Instead the aliens seem like bumbling muppets. That said, Robertson does hint about that, that they are too dumb to take over a world. To his credit, they are not simply men in rubber suits; they seem to have some truly alien and mysterious motives. He does leave some tantalizing clues about their alien psychology at the missile bases, so perhaps the sequel - which I have not read - does go some way to explaining this weakness in the plot. The other thing that was a bit off-putting to me was the style of dialogue. Some of the characters always seemed to have a witty quip, even if they are dying with a gutshot wound. Reminded me a bit of early Heinlein juveniles actually, but his characters often do not seem to have believable conversations. But, if you think balloons and a few pounds of homemade C4 can bring down a trillion ton starship, then such trifles will not matter. It's like a summer movie; there are lots of guns, good guys, aliens and big explosions. It's lots of fun and entertaining, but leave your brain at the door.

Gritty

I was ready to hate it but along the way I started to enjoy the gritty truth of the story. Well done, the first half is teeth gritting hard to bear harshness and loss. The whole story is worth the journey.

The story begins with an outbreak of The Flu. 99% effective and deadly. One of mankinds greatest fears is a disease that could wipe out the world's population in one fell swoop. Those who survive are devastated. Some choose to prepare, some take what they want, others pray for death. Add aliens into the mix and, well, all bets are off. A good read. Can't wait to read the sequels.

An intriguing storyline, but the writing and descriptions were truly stunning. Robertson had me standing, walking, running, hiding and fighting alongside his characters as they moved through a very real and terrifying world. Very nicely done!

Meh
May 15th, 2014
Can't bring myself to finish reading this book. Book shifts between two couples. The male protagonists are too similar, and the constant switching between the two gets tiring. Far too many descriptive words in a sentence, makes for slow staggered reading. Became a chore to read. Granted I'm only halfway or so. But I'm not sure if I will ever finish it. And the sudden necrophilic reference involving one of the male protagonist was out of nowhere, random and distasteful by any standard.

I really enjoyed this fast paced, action filled, science-fiction thriller. The characters were believable, interesting & engaging & developed into heroic figures throughout the intersecting story-lines. The finale requires an allowance for luck beyond that usually needed in fiction, but probably was required to keep the pace of the book supersonic.
