NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

For centuries the Four Lands enjoyed freedom from its demon-haunted past, protected by magic-enhanced borders from the dark dimension known as the Forbidding and the profound evil imprisoned there. But now the unthinkable is happening: The ancient wards securing the barrier between order and mayhem have begun to erode—and generations of bloodthirsty, monstrous creatures, fueled by a rage thousands of years in the making, are poised to spill forth, seeking revenge for what was done to them.

Young Elf Arling Elessedil possesses the enchanted means to close the breach and once more seal the denizens of the Forbidding in their prison. But when she falls into the hands of the powerful Federation’s diabolical Prime Minister, her efforts may be doomed. Only her determined sister, Aphen, who bears the Elfstones and commands their magic, has any hope of saving Arling from the hideous fate her captor has in store.

Meanwhile, Railing Ohmsford—desperate to save his imprisoned brother—seeks to discover if his famed but ill-fated ancestor Grianne is still alive and willing to help him save the world . . . no matter the odds or the consequences.

BONUS: This edition includes an excerpt from Terry Brooks's The High Druid's Blade.

Classic Terry Brooks, always an enjoyable and complex read. With this series however, I think he has a case of too many enemies. Each one of them could have added more to the depth of the story but got lost a bit by switching to another, for example, the changeling spy at Aborlon, done well in Elfstones, but minimized here and became an annoying sidebar obstacle. Despite this I still found myself not wanting to put each volume down until I had finished it, far too quickly for my liking. Mr. Brooks is the most accomplished I have ever seen at keeping the continuity of the characters' family connection but giving each individual such a distinctive personality.

Finale of the dark legacy series

Pity about the conclusion. Seemingly all sown up but some ends remain loose. What is happening to the Order? The Elfstones that got pulled back into the Forbidding with Tesla Dart? The broken promise? Perhaps another series again.

Successful Overall
September 21st, 2013
Terry Brooks was successful in continuing the saga of characters from the past with the plights of their descendants. I found that the presence of the much aged past characters within the current plot to be even more engrossing. Mentionable figures include the King of the River. Brooks was skillful in keeping the connections tangible and the plot unfolding in a logical natural way based on what had gone on before. On the other hand I was disappointed with the disposition of the witch wraith herself. She had worked so hard on transforming her character and legacy only to be forcefully returned to that frightening state. I also found Railing too much like his ancestor in decision making which became easily predictable in a few parts. All this being said, the plot was masterful, creative , and engrossing! I couldn't put the book down and was held in suspense for many exciting scenes.
