The beautiful practicality of her teaching has made Pema Chödrön one of the most beloved of contemporary American spiritual authors among Buddhists and non-Buddhists alike. A collection of talks she gave between 1987 and 1994, the book is a treasury of wisdom for going on living when we are overcome by pain and difficulties. Chödrön discusses:

  • Using painful emotions to cultivate wisdom, compassion, and courage
  • Communicating so as to encourage others to open up rather than shut down
  • Practices for reversing habitual patterns
  • Methods for working with chaotic situations
  • Ways for creating effective social action

This is quite possibly the most personally important book I've read. It has real, practical, attainable, and potentially life-changing, wisdom. Pema has a way of reaching people that has the reader acknowledging, "yes, this is me" and she does so in a way that evokes unequivocal compassion for whatever comes up. If you're looking for a light read, this will do it. If you're looking to delve deeply, this will do it. What is your intention?

A light read with insightful ways to look at any negative situation positively. I wouldn't call myself a Buddhist but have used some techniques I've learned in this book in my everyday life. It helps you look at every situation from many angles.
