Synopsis

The fateful first meeting of Enza and Ciro takes place amid the haunting majesty of the Italian Alps at the turn of the last century. Still teenagers, they are separated when Ciro is banished from his village and sent to hide in New York's Little Italy, apprenticed to a shoemaker, leaving a bereft Enza behind. But when her own family faces disaster, she, too, is forced to emigrate to America. Though destiny will reunite the star-crossed lovers, it will, just as abruptly, separate them once again-sending Ciro off to serve in World War I, while Enza is drawn into the glamorous world of the opera . . . and into the life of the international singing sensation Enrico Caruso. Still, Enza and Ciro have been touched by fate-and, ultimately, the power of their love will change their lives forever.

A riveting historical epic of love and family, war and loss, risk and destiny, inspired by the author's own family history, The Shoemaker's Wife is the novel Adriana Trigiani was born to write.

Although rather 2 dimensional in places, this is a truly lovely story of strength, endurance, and courage, and the importance of family and of those friends who are as close as family.

I enjoyed and loved this book (along with Adriana Trigiani's other books, "Lucia, Lucia", "Brava Valentine", "'Very Valentine", "Don't Sing at the Table", "Viola in Reel Life", and more. But "The Shoemaker's Wife" is very special to me, my grandmother travelled from Toscana to Argentina at 17-year-old to marry my grandfather (they met during a trip my grandfather's family made to Italy). My grandma was VERY SPECIAL in my life, he taught me everything, she still is a very important to me, her stories about her childhood in the mountains, she taught me how to cook, sew, knit, she read to me in Italian (I don't speak the language very well, but I understand a lot). The Grandma in AT's books reminds me of her and brings back beautiful and happy memories.

Loved how the story unfolded between the two brothers. On their own and both with different lives.

This book was written in such a fashion, it read like a movie. The description used to illustrate every movement allowed the movie to continue to play throughout my mind on every page. I fell in love with each of the characters, and their stories. It was so good, I read it in 4 days, staying up until 3 A.M. to find out what happened next!

To say that I loved reading this book is an understatement. It's a story that touched me deeply because it explores themes I am familiar with: the immigrant experience, the Italian setting, and characters that remind me of my own relatives. I savoured every page! I have read only one other book from Trigiani, which was Very Valentine, and although I enjoyed it, I found the storytelling and writing in The Shoemaker's Wife far superior.

Such a beautifully written book by Adriana Trigiani! Would highly recommend this read. I found the ending a bit rushed (maybe because I never wanted it to end), but overall loved this book.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I had just been to New York and visited the Lower Tenament Museum so I could picture how these people really lived. Once I started reading I couldn't put it down until I finished it. It certainly is a recommended read in my estimation.
