Synopsis

Gavin Guile is the Prism, the most powerful man in the world. He is high priest and emperor, a man whose power, wit, and charm are all that preserves a tenuous peace. But Prisms never last, and Guile knows exactly how long he has left to live: Five years to achieve five impossible goals.

But when Guile discovers he has a son, born in a far kingdom after the war that put him in power, he must decide how much he's willing to pay to protect a secret that could tear his world apart.

The black prism

Fast paced and exciting, the author returns in fine form but refreshingly doesn't visit familiar archetypes. Quite a different saga from the fantastic night angel books and that's a good thing. A fresh and interesting magic system, charming characters and thrills and surprises that are becoming this young writers trademark. I highly recommend this book and this author.

Not the same as the Night Angel
April 7th, 2014
I love this story. I had read it before The Blinding Knife came out and now that I finally have that one I decided to reread The Black Prism. For people who read the Night Angel trilogy, this is not at all the same and has a much different feel to it. The magic system is new, the characters are new, and the story is refreshingly new. I rate a book on how it makes me feel, I don't care if sometimes seems like elements are cliché. That said, I didn't notice any of those elements and felt that there were many wonderful and surprising twists and lots of action.

Color Me Impressed!
January 2nd, 2014
Ironically, in a world where people do magic by using colors, the characters could all be painted with shades of gray. Gavin Guile is the Prism; the most powerful "drafter" in the world, as well as the religious leader of the Seven Satrapies. In the aftermath of the False Prism war against his own brother, Gavin tries to maintain peace and order within his lands. This is a fantastic tale of political intrigue and war where everyone seems to be hiding a dark secret, making you rethink your opinion on who are the heroes and who are the villains.

Good read

Great book, and what lacked in initial character and background development, made up for with a compelling new and wonderful weave on magic manipulation. Look forward to the next chapter.
