Synopsis

In the year 2044, reality is an ugly place. The only time teenage Wade Watts really feels alive is when he's jacked into the virtual utopia known as the OASIS. Wade's devoted his life to studying the puzzles hidden within this world's digital confines—puzzles that are based on their creator's obsession with the pop culture of decades past and that promise massive power and fortune to whoever can unlock them.
But when Wade stumbles upon the first clue, he finds himself beset by players willing to kill to take this ultimate prize. The race is on, and if Wade's going to survive, he'll have to win—and confront the real world he's always been so desperate to escape.

Geek love!

Fantastic book for anyone who came of age in the 80s... I was afraid I might not get some of the many, many pop-culture references throughout the book, especially those pertaining to video games, but there was no need to worry. Great, epic "done-in-one" adventure. I think fans of The Hunger Games would love it.

A video game in book form
March 3rd, 2014
This story is fantastic. It is filled to the brim with references to video games, movies, TV shows and music from the 80's, 90's and beyond. The characters are likeable and interesting and their quest for Halladay's Easter Egg, hidden somewhere within the vast, simulated world called the Oasis, is enthralling from start to finish. I highly recommend it for fans of video games; late, twentieth century, pop culture; science fiction, or all three.

This is a Must read for any "Gamers" out there. 'Ready Player One' begins nearly one century in the future with a fast pace, slightly redundant, review of modern day MMO (multi-player online) gaming, and its ramifications in an over populated world. A brilliant PC video game designer creats an alternate virtual world where peoples of all nations can seek mental refuage from their real world problems. When this famous designer passes away he leaves behind 250 billion dollars as a grand prize to the first person able to "Win" his very last game in a virtual world. This book is special for its lively review of 1980's music, video, fashion and geo poplitical cultures.

THE sci-fi book for my generation
January 31st, 2014
If you were born between 1965 and 1975, this is the sci-fi book for you. Hands down the most fun I've had reading a book, ever. It was like experiencing the best of future-predicting science fiction mixed with an amazing re-hash of late 70's to late 80's pop culture. One of my favourite books ever.

A fantastic read. Growing up surrounded by games really drew me to this book, but it wasn't just the gaming aspect. I felt really proud of myself to recognise almost all of the references to different books, movies, games and music from 80s pop culture, with it being one my favourite decades. Anyone who appreciates a nostalgic rush and a great book to get sucked into, (almost literally, I finished the book in only three or four sittings) should definitely pick this up.
