Synopsis

Robert Dewar was born in East Africa, and moved to South Africa when he was 6 years old. He grew up in Cape Town and Johannesburg, and was educated at the University of the Witwatersrand. Restless and adventurous, he began an on-off battle with alcohol in his early thirties, a battle it seemed for 15 years that he might lose. He traveled between South Africa and Britain for two decades, during which time he worked as a private investigator, a game conservator, a civil servant, and a business researcher and writer. Aged 47, whilst living in the south east of England, he at last defeated alcoholism, a battle waged that is now a long time in the past. During the next ten years he became a radical political activist, a public speaker, and wrote for online publications under a pseudonym. Today he lives in a remote community in the western Highlands of Scotland. This is a victor's story, for all its sometime failures: a tale - despite illness and difficulties - of triumph over adversity.
