Synopsis

“Will the tiger be menacing; will the ocean be threatening; will the island be something out of Frankenstein or will it be an Eden?”—Yann Martel

Life of Pi, first published in 2002, became an international bestseller and remains one of the most extraordinary and popular works of contemporary fiction.

In 2005 an international competition was held to find the perfect artist to illustrate Yann Martel’s Man Booker Prize–winning novel. From thousands of entrants, Croatian artist Tomislav Torjanac was chosen. This lavishly produced edition features forty of Torjanac’s beautiful four-color illustrations, bringing Life of Pi to splendid, eye-popping life.

Tomislav Torjanac says of his illustrations: “My vision of the illustrated edition of Life of Pi is based on paintings from a first person’s perspective—Pi’s perspective. The interpretation of what Pi sees is intermeshed with what he feels and it is shown through [the] use of colors, perspective, symbols, hand gestures, etc.”

Movie was quicker & more to the point. I found the book was excruciating to read. Many pages filled with zoology details that non-zoologist don't really care about. I just wanted to read about his life & adventure. I haven't recommended this book at all.

Life of Pi. My son's uncle had given him this book when it first came out. He said Mom you've just got to read this. I was as enthralled by the book as he was. So well done. Such a story has never before been written. (The movie actually did a really good job of it and you ccccan't say that about all book to movie marriagaes.) CI

Did the adventure really happen or was it a way for a child to cope with a trauma he couldn't handle? After 300 pages of reading, you are told it all could be a made up fantasy and if you are anything like me, you feel ripped off.

I saw the movie before I read the book and found the book immensely satisfying in fleshing out what the movie could not describe. It is a fascinating story of a man's adventures in both his physical world and his inner turmoil.

Watched the movie, will be reading the book very soon, am sure it will give me a better insight and more indepth understanding, movies tend to miss a lot of the finer details.

A riveting story! Great for its own sake, but even moreso when you figure out the underlying context. An inspiring story of survival and triumph ofthe human spirit, and a look at the depths of depravity some can sink in a crisis. Highly recommend one reads the book before watching the movie, which has stuning images and brings the book to life.

well written, sweeps you along. the story starts a little slow and very plausible and then moves faster into the unbelievable. however, you want to read to the end and hope our hero is saved.

The book was intriguing. Not the type I usually read but the Canada Reads promotion was irresistible. The ending was a surprise to me.
