Reverend Abraham Webber had preached in a large church in Los Angeles until a tragedy tore his life apart. He gave up preaching and moved to Montana to live a solitary and secluded life.

Dace Dalton, a rancher and elder in a small church in town, befriends and convinces him to preach in the church when their minister leaves. Dace's life is turned around when his wife disappears, leaving him with three young sons.

Tillie Reynolds moves into town and keeps to herself, refusing any friendly gestures from anyone in the area. Reverend Webber stops at her home to invite her to church, riding there on his palomino, Gideon. He is greeted with growls from a German shepherd, the sound of a bullet being pumped into a rifle, and a woman warning him to get off her property. Later, she needs to beg him to help her injured dog. After helping her, Reverend Webber has to wonder what or whom she is hiding from.

Enemies come to cause problems for the three main characters, and two FBI men help set things straight, along with other characters from the area.
