Synopsis

Has a more unlikely story been told than that of goaltender Ivan McLelland? GOLD MIND TO GOLD MEDAL AND BEYOND is a tale of a young boy overcoming extreme poverty, youthful ignorance, and injury in pursuit of the classic Canadian dream to play hockey at the highest level.

With class, determination, and sheer toughness in a dangerous era for goaltenders, McLelland turned aside life's challenges just as he stopped countless pucks point-blank. Readers are taken on the ice and into the dressing room for an inside look of the rambunctious rollicking Penticton Vees, one of hockey's great 'Cinderella' teams whose unlikely 1955 world championship spawned the classic Canada-Russia hockey rivalry that persists to this day.

This is more than just a hockey book — it is about life. Romance, lifelong love, marriage, family, and the heart-wrenching intrusion of Alzheimer's all figure prominently. Just as McLelland's play warranted so many nights with the Vees, GOLD MINE TO GOLD MEDAL AND BEYOND will earn three-star selection from any hockey fan and many that are not.

Simply the best hockey book I've read
April 13th, 2015
Ivan recalls his life with vivid detail and candour. He relays the reality of the economics of professional hockey and discusses firsthand the decision he faced in weighting his athletic dreams off against the needs of his family. His story of getting to and winning the World Championship against the USSR is inspeing. I've read a lot of hockey books in my lifetime; by far this is the best.
