Contemporary Romance intended for adult audiences. Told from dual point of view, this novel can be read as a standalone or as part of the Living Heartwood series.

Love means fading out so another shines brighter.

Right clothes. Right school. Right fiancé. As a Wyndemere, Arian’s expected to abide by the rules. The most important: be perfect. But Arian’s seemingly flawless life is far from it. An embarrassing expulsion from her father's alma mater spirals an already unhealthy obsession out of control, exposing a dark truth.

Faced with having to attend a small private college after a stint in rehab, Arian’s ready to coast under the radar and repair some of the wreckage, but her father’s looming control is like a vise choking off her air supply.

When a run-in with Braxton’s beloved star quarterback, Ryder Nash, puts Arian squarely in the crosshairs of his devoted teammates, the last of her controlled, orderly world unhinges. As the pranks and paybacks escalate, Arian and Ryder’s rivalry takes a passionate turn. And once Arian glimpses beneath the all-star-athlete exterior Ryder projects, she realizes he’s far more than just a jock.

As their relationship intensifies, outside forces feel the threat. Outrunning their pasts doesn’t mean history won’t repeat itself, but Ryder can’t let that happen. He’s just one Championship game away from breaking the mold. Only one moment, one choice, might change everything.

At the end I was smiling with Satisfaction!

This book begins and ends with carrot cake. I love that. This is the second book in this series that I've read (They can all be read stand alone) and I've noticed something important about the way this author writes New Adult books. Her books always deal with strong issues. These are the hard things that new adults face and are so much more than sexy times between college classes. I love that about these books. They feel so much more real to me. Both Ryder and Ari have issues. Their lives aren't their own. They have let others take it over and both are unhappy at heart. And seeing each other and getting to know each other didn't fix everything. They didn't fall into each others arms and yell, "FINALLY"! No they argued and resisted. Both are used to keeping others away. And that tension between them was so fun. I laughed and gasped a few times as they tried to push and pull at each other. They seriously take that fighting as foreplay thing to a whole new level. I loved some of the secondary characters and really disliked others, on purpose I'm sure. Vee is one of my favorites. She's desperately in love with Gavin and willing to do anything to get his attention. Her desire to have that leads to some situations. Love both of them and hope to see them again. So not a fan of Ryder's brother and Ari's parents. They're the string pullers and I wanted to slap them. But it wasn't me who needed to. I was so happy to see the growth that both Ryder and Ari went through to take control of their own lives. I was so proud of both of them. Carrot cake aside, this book has a way of dealing with each secret and problem along the way carefully. The secrets came out slowly and they were balanced with the story so that it felt natural and real. I was always wondering what would happen to fix this issue or that secret. There was never that point where I could say that I knew what was coming next. Even something in the epilogue surprised me. This isn't an easy thing to do to someone like me who reads so much. And it was part of why I was smiling when I finished this one. Relationships that feel real and complex drive this emotional ride to a wonderful ending that had me smiling. If you love the sexy times mixed with real new adult issues, then make sure you pick this one up.
