A GAME OF THRONES
A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE: BOOK ONE

Long ago, in a time forgotten, a preternatural event threw the seasons out of balance. In a land where summers can last decades and winters a lifetime, trouble is brewing. The cold is returning, and in the frozen wastes to the north of Winterfell, sinister forces are massing beyond the kingdom’s protective Wall. To the south, the king’s powers are failing—his most trusted adviser dead under mysterious circumstances and his enemies emerging from the shadows of the throne. At the center of the conflict lie the Starks of Winterfell, a family as harsh and unyielding as the frozen land they were born to. Now Lord Eddard Stark is reluctantly summoned to serve as the king’s new Hand, an appointment that threatens to sunder not only his family but the kingdom itself.

Sweeping from a harsh land of cold to a summertime kingdom of epicurean plenty, A Game of Thrones tells a tale of lords and ladies, soldiers and sorcerers, assassins and bastards, who come together in a time of grim omens. Here an enigmatic band of warriors bear swords of no human metal; a tribe of fierce wildlings carry men off into madness; a cruel young dragon prince barters his sister to win back his throne; a child is lost in the twilight between life and death; and a determined woman undertakes a treacherous journey to protect all she holds dear. Amid plots and counter-plots, tragedy and betrayal, victory and terror, allies and enemies, the fate of the Starks hangs perilously in the balance, as each side endeavors to win that deadliest of conflicts: the game of thrones.

Unparalleled in scope and execution, A Game of Thrones is one of those rare reading experiences that catch you up from the opening pages, won’t let you go until the end, and leave you yearning for more.

Defining moment

This book and the ones that follow are the finest fiction books written in this or any century. The detph of the saga and the story told are the stuff of legend. The multiple viewpoints, intrigue and battles that rage throughout are epic in scope, yet there is a human quality. The reader will be drawn in to this world and not wish for the story to end.

Amazing

The plot, the characters, the dialog. It's all excellent. He leaves a little to be desired in terms of his writing style, but after a chapter or two, I stopped noticing. I was so swept up in the story. I'm usually a slow reader, but I ploughed through this in less than a week.

Wonderful

Fantastic beginning to a series. It is shocking and newer style than what I am accustomed too from a fantasy novel. An epic story to last forever is clearly incoming.

Game of Thrones

If you like fantasy, you will love this series, Fire and Ice by George R. R. Martin! The books can be somewhat confusing and are extremely detailed, so you can't speed read them! He draws you quickly into this wondrous world he's written. I've watched the first three seasons of the HBO Series, " Game of Thrones " but I have always found reading the books a much more satisfying experience. The only complaint I have is the author is slow getting out book 6 & 7!! Be prepared, if you read this series, he really leaves you hanging at the conclusion of book 5!!! I want to call him and tell him to hurry up already :-)

This is an intricate and detailed world brought to life masterfully. A fantasy world that feels real and raw. Highly enjoyable.

I very much enjoyed this book. The characters drew me right in and I found myself finding things to love and hate about each character whether "good" or "bad". I will definitely continue reading this series.

Not having watched the TV series, I wasn't sure what to expect. I found the presentation of each chapter from the perspective of different lead characters held my interest as each one left me wondering what would happen next to that individual. An interesting fantasy world with all the necessary magic, dragons, warlocks, knights, ladies and twists of narrative in the making of kings.
