It is April 1942 as the heavy clouds of World War II hang over the port city of Vizag. As air raid sirens blare, Japanese planes begin pounding the coast. Left with no other choice but to escape, Dr. Durga Prasad packs his medicine bag, gathers his family, and heads to the railway station. As the family travels to Yellamanchili, Dr. Prasad’s son, Shiva Prasad Chakravarthy, reflects on his memories about when he came face-to-face with Nookey, an untouchable scavenger girl who was the first to expose him to the age-old Indian caste system and the repercussions of her two arranged marriages. While the family begins a new life in Yellamanchili, Dr. Prasad encourages Shiva to play with Krishna, the son of an untouchable servant. After the boys’ friendship grows along with them, Shiva continues pursuing his dream of becoming a doctor without any idea that life is about to take him to a unique position in London and a full circle to Nookey once again. But when tragedy strikes, Shiva makes a declaration that changes everything. In this compelling story that reveals the complexities of the caste system in a small Indian village, two families attempt to transcend inequalities and prove that love is more powerful than barriers.
