Synopsis

The aim of this work is to describe the state of Saussurean studies in China. The first Chinese translation of Saussure’s Cours de linguistique générale was published only in 1980, although the interpretation and diffusion of Saussurean ideas began much earlier. The increasing number of translations, monographs and articles recently published confirms the interest manifested by Chinese scholars towards Saussurean linguistic ideas, and demonstrates how the debate concerning the Cours is still far from over. I will illustrate the interpretation of Saussure's theories in China from three different perspectives, reflected in the three-chapter division of this work.
