Synopsis

In this breakout standalone novel of suspense in the vein of Gone Girl and The Girl on a Train, a woman agrees to help an old boyfriend who has been framed for murder—but begins to suspect that she is the one being manipulated.

Twenty years ago she ruined his life. Now she has the chance to save it.

Widower Jack Harris has resisted the dating scene ever since the shooting of his wife Molly by a fifteen-year-old boy three years ago. An early morning run along the Hudson River changes that when he spots a woman in last night’s party dress, barefoot, enjoying a champagne picnic alone, reading his favorite novel. Everything about her reminds him of what he used to have with Molly. Eager to help Jack find love again, his best friend posts a message on a popular website after he mentions the encounter. Days later, that same beautiful stranger responds and invites Jack to meet her in person at the waterfront. That’s when Jack’s world falls apart.

Olivia Randall is one of New York City’s best criminal defense lawyers. When she hears that her former fiancé, Jack Harris, has been arrested for a triple homicide—and that one of the victims was connected to his wife’s murder—there is no doubt in her mind as to his innocence. The only question is who would go to such great lengths to frame him—and why?

For Olivia, representing Jack is a way to make up for past regrets, to absolve herself of guilt from a tragic decision, a secret she has held for twenty years. But as the evidence against him mounts, she is forced to confront her doubts. The man she knew could not have done this. But what if she never really knew him?

Really Good Thriller With A Surprise Ending!!

The Ex is how someone from your past can come back to only put you in a difficult position. Olivia is a Criminal Defense Lawyer when she gets wind of her ex fiance Jack, who is facing three counts of homicide. Twenty years ago, she broke his heart and now she has a chance to redeem herself with Jack but not everything is what it seems. When Olivia receives a call from Jack's daughter Buckley about trying to save her dad from the charges, Olivia is conflicted about what to do. As facts come out about what happened that day and knowing that Jack had it out for one of the guys that got shoot since his son took his wife's Molly life, nothing it was it seems. When all the pieces line up and it's discovered who really did what, it all leads to an ending that nobody saw coming and Olivia realizing that the past stays the past for a reason. I liked how this book drags you in and keeps you on your toes until the very last page. I'm usually good at figuring out who did what but this takes the cake and the ending was surprising especially to see who Olivia ends up marrying. It did get a little slow during some parts but overall it was a pretty good book. Thank You to Alafair Burke for writing a heart-stopping novel that left me wanting to read more books by you!! I received this book from the Publisher in exchange for a honest review.

    Who Done It!

Olivia Randall, defense attorney, finds herself defending Jack Harris 20 years after she broke his heart. Widower Jack Harris is a successful novelist working from his NYC apartment and is the sole parent of 16 yr old Buckley. Who set Jack up to take the fall for the shooting death of Malcolm Nelley, hedge fund owner and father of Todd who shot 13 people in a subway, one of whom was Jack's wife and Buckley's mother, Molly. With the help of Einer, Don, Charlotte and Lissa, Olivia unravels the events leading up to Jack's arrest while dealing with her own guilt over her student years living with Jack. The book keeps you guessing until the final pages. I didn't want to put it down!!!
