How can it be that one day you're sailing along, writing up a storm and enjoying every moment of it... and the next day, you can't think of a thing to write? No matter how long you sit there, nothing comes.

If it's only one day, not much damage is done - but if it continues, it could mean not only the end of your book, but the end of your writing career. The longer you are away from writing, the harder it is to pick up the threads and start again. It's not just a matter of losing touch with your characters, or forgetting where you were going with the plot. It's very much a psychological thing: you start to get that I-Just-Can't-Do-It feeling. ("I don't know why I thought I could write a book in the first place...")

People ask you how the book is coming along, and you smile brightly and say "Fine!" before swiftly changing the subject. Or you brush it off with something like "Oh, I've been so busy lately I just haven't had time to work on it as much as I'd like... next month things should calm down."

What if things don't calm down next month?

What will you do? Give up your dream?

No. You shouldn't have to do that. Before you decide that you made a huge mistake even starting your book, you need to work out what's going wrong and how to fix it. "Writer's block" isn't some kind of disease; it simply means that for now, you can't bring yourself to write. When you take a good long look at your situation, you might be surprised at how you can methodically work through any problems and get your writing flowing again.

The Busy Writer's KickStart Program gives you an 8-Step Plan to get your writing on track again - or to set you up for success from the very start, if you're a beginner.
