Black Jack the Cat grows up in an artist commune in the City of Beachtown just inland from the mighty Pacific Ocean. Their he becomes proficient at many of the skills possessed by the many artists who inhabit the commune. When nasty real estate developers Mr. and Mrs. Witchell buy the artist commune, the artists are forced to relocate. Black Jack and his Master Dave, an aspiring novelist, fall on hard times. Dave turns Black Jack over to the care of dreaded Mrs. Witchell, intending to recoup his beloved cat in better times. Black Jack is held captive inside Mrs. Witchell's newly renovated former artist commune where he befriends a timid indoor cat named Tuna. When Mr. Witchell decides to rent the beach property out and move to a five-star resort in Palm Springs, Black Jack and Tuna are taken along on the move. At a gas station just outside Palm Springs, Jack and Tuna make an escape from Mrs. Witchell's car. The unlikely duo begin the long journey across the desert then through the vast City of Angels to reunite with loved ones back in Beachtown. Along the way they partner up with two salamanders, Rex and Sally, who act as guides through the treacherous desert terrain. A pack of hungry coyotes is just one threat they must avoid there. Between the desert and Beachtown lies the City of Angels whose name is clearly undercut by its harsh reputation. As they pass through the city they encounter a large pack of rats in Adams Morgan. Nicky-the-Rat, a dapper fellow who wears a top hat, tags along with the cats and salamanders to aid their effort back to Beachtown. While passing through the city's Echo Park section, they encounter a junkyard where cats have organized a championship baseball game. Black Jack is shanghaied aboard The Echo Park Scrappers team and given the utmost importance of being their starting pitcher. After this event, the notorious Dog Town becomes the final hazard to traverse before Black Jack and his band of adventurers reach the safety of Beachtown. Will Jack's true love, Tabitha the Tabby, still be around to welcome Jack home? Is Black Jack's Master Dave alive and well? Jack and his mates can only hope so in The Adventures of Black Jack the Cat!
