While investigating spurious reports of troll activity in an out-of-the-way corner of the realm, Chief Investigator Armonte Severand stumbles upon a genuine mystery that turns out to be a test of some of his other, lesser known, skills....
Milder's Crossing is about as far away from the heart of the realm as one can get, but it is the center of all the activity surrounding mysterious events that may or may not involve trolls or even troll witches. Closer scrutiny reveals a genuine mystery, and it soon becomes clear that the Chief Investigator faces a potentially deadlier adversary: a souldancer; a manipulator of men and minds more powerful than any mundane wizard.
