Synopsis

Travis teaches the reader about social thinking and understanding context of social relationships with autism. Social thinking is used to interpret what other people are trying to say or tell what they mean by something. It can also be used to work on your own body language and communicate better to other people what you are thinking or feeling. Social thinking is more than just a social skill.

Social thinking involves taking that social skill and working with other social skills to come together to have a conversation with someone. We must put all pieces of the puzzle together when we begin to have a conversation with other people and it is very important that we understand social thinking so we can better communicate with our peers.

It is important to start teaching social thinking from a young age. "Dr. Peter Gerhardt is very good at helping people use social thinking skills to understand social context. One of my favorite Dr. Gerhardt stories is when he tells the story of a woman with autism who got pregnant by mistake. When she was growing up her mother had a conversation with her and her mother made it very clear that she could not get pregnant until she got married.

The girl with autism trusted her mother and therefore really believed that she could not get pregnant until she got married. She did not use any protection for having safe sex and she ended up getting pregnant and losing all trust in her mother. What her mother meant was that she did not want her child getting pregnant until she got married. What the girl heard was you physically cannot get pregnant until you get married. This girl really believed that there was no way for her to physically get pregnant until she got married. This created many issues and tension between the girl and her mother. What happened here? A small social thinking error that had tremendous consequences."
