Synopsis

Life is good on the Navajo Indian Reservation as the end times start. Ha'asidi is glad that he lives here because the anti-Christ has begun to consolidate his power and these wilderness areas are the safest place to hide.

When The World's new leader begins to look for a scapegoat to blame the country's problems on, he turns on the Navajo people, called Renegades, who have followed a radical Christian way of life.

When the Presidential team is assassinated half way through their second term, the Renegades are held responsible. The country falls easy prey to the stories of over zealous Indian uprisings that daily leap off the pages of newspapers throughout the country. The people of the Americas quickly unify against the Renegades and all other religious fanatics known or suspected.

Ha'asidi's flock is prepared. All records of membership and involvement in the 'Hogan Diyin God,' the House of the Holy God, are rapidly destroyed. One day later, as the sun rises against the purple and pink shades of morning, more than four thousand people simply disappear.

Maria is involved in none of that. Each morning as hundreds of government employees arrive for work, she blends with them as they scurry ant-like into the front doors and down the marbled hallways. Where the main hall ended in a mirrored reflection of itself, an unobtrusive looking doorway with a security guard posted outside, is inset into the wall on the right.

Most DOE personnel find their offices without ever passing this door. The small handful of people who enter here are discreetly identified by retinal pattern and quickly step aboard one of the small shuttles waiting for them.

The strip on the back of their Department ID instructs the magnetically floating shuttle to take them on the 3 minute ride that ends some 300 feet under the ground and almost a mile from the DOE's main offices. Somewhere above, the desert sand blows over them.

Political criminals are sent here. Code named 'Renegade Level,' their responsibility is to gain information concerning each convict's criminal activities. Terrorists, political activists, high tech thieves and military criminals are all brought here for 'debriefing'.

Debriefing is often cruel and painful. It sometimes ends in death - sometimes in a reformed human being. No one on Renegade Level is required to care. Debriefing lasts as long as you have information that your 'counselor' wants. On this the DOE's third level, the human rights that operate on the surface of our world no longer function. The re-education process, you would call it torture, never bothers Maria, except when children are involved...
