Synopsis

In the latest mystery in the New York Times bestselling Cat in the Stacks series, librarian Charlie Harris and his Maine Coon cat Diesel must clear a friend when the evidence is stacked against her…

Springtime in Mississippi is abloom with beauty, but the library’s employees are too busy worrying to stop and smell the flowers. The new library director, Oscar Reilly, is a brash, unfriendly Yankee who’s on a mission to cut costs—and his first targets are the archive and the rare book collection.

As annoying as a long-overdue book, Reilly quickly raises the hackles of everyone on staff, including Charlie’s fiery friend Melba—whom Reilly wants to replace with someone younger. But his biggest offense is declaring all four-legged creatures banned from the stacks.

With enemies aplenty, the suspect list is long when Reilly's body is discovered in the library. But things take a turn for the worse when a threatening e-mail throws suspicion on Melba.

Charlie is convinced that his friend is no murderer, especially when he catches sight of a menacing stranger lurking around the library. Now he and Diesel will have to read between the lines, before Melba is shelved under “G” for guilty…

    Diesel is Charming!

This was my first introduction to Miranda James and The Cat in the Stacks Mystery series. I was immediately intrigued because I love Maine Coon cats and I adore reading cozy mysteries with animal companions in them. When I started this book I was surprised to find that the main character was in fact a male, and not a female, which tends to be the majority of all lead characters in cozy mysteries. I did however have a hard time getting into the story, as it seemed the first 1/3 of the book was all about this horrible person, Oscar Reilly. While I understand that the story needs to set up how despicable this man is, it just seemed that there was lots and lots of continued ranting about him. As bad as it sounds, once he was murdered the story actually sped up and got interesting. At this point I was sucked in to the "whodunit" aspect of the mystery. I am glad that I stuck through the first several chapters because I ended up really enjoying the story and characters, especially Diesel! The plot itself is well written and well developed. I did peg the "who done it" about halfway through, even if I didn't get the "why" part correct and boy were there some twists at the end. I also thoroughly enjoyed all of the descriptions and details about the running of a library. I found those aspects of the story very interesting! All of the characters are well-rounded and well-written, making this story a fun read. Overall, No Cats Allowed was a fun read with good writing, just hang through the beginning, as once once the murder happens, the story gets good! I think I need to go back and read the series from the beginning! I received an ARC of this book, from NetGalley, in exchange for my honest review.

Another Great Mystery By A Talented Author

What Do You Like? If You Like Murder Mysteries, This One Is For You! It Was Murder; Murder Most Foul! But To A Richly Deserving Victim! No Cats Allowed By Miranda James opens the office doors! Story Line: Diesel, a beautiful Maine Coon cat, is back on the job at the university library with his owner Charlie, along with a cast of characters. Author Miranda James infused this book with awesome characters and opens wide the door to the interoffice turmoil, accusations, crying, anger, friendship, and a violent murder. What Follows Is A Character Assassination Of Ms. James Murder Victim! :) Ms. James portrayal of the murder victim’s character was skillful, she made you want to stand up and cheer when he was found dead. Ms. James really created an obnoxious character in Reilly. He was a character you love to hate. What a twerp! What follows is an investigation that filled with suspects and emotions. Suspects Created By Ms. James: Ms. James filled the book with a variety of suspects, with various motives to kill the new library director, Oscar Reilly. All the suspects are upstanding employees, who have crossed swords and words with the director, along with Reilly’s ex-brother-in-law that suddenly appears just before the murder. Emotion Filled Characters Miranda James created characters filled with rolling emotion; lots of crying on Charlie’s shoulders with lots of petting Diesel. Diesel is a wonderful character, as he almost seems human and adds an extra element to this tale. Recommendation: Miranda James kept me guessing the identity of who committed the crime and why; she held my interest throughout the book as she skillfully wove this murder mystery with interesting suspects. Her development of the characters was good and the pacing, though a little slow in the beginning of the book, picked up speed quickly. I loved this story, and Diesel is such a wonderful character, you just might to run out and get your own Maine Coon. Books reviews of any novel are dependent on the book review author's opinion; book reviews on line under my name are my opinion.

    Seventh Book in Series!

No Cats Allowed by Miranda James is the seventh book in A Cat in the Stacks Mystery series. There is a new interim director at the Athena College Library. Unfortunately, Oscar Reilly is going out of his way to alienate everyone on the staff including Charlie Harris and his Maine Coon cat, Diesel. When Charlie is asked to leave Diesel at home, Charlie decides to take a leave of absence. But then Oscar Reilly turns up dead in the basement (crushed with shelving). When Charlie's friend and co-worker, Mabel Gilley is accused of the crime, Charlie starts investigating. Then Charlie is asked to step in as the new interim director. Charlie may not last long on the job when someone tries to put him out of commission. Can Charlie figure out who the killer is and stay out of harm’s way? I enjoyed reading No Cats Allowed. No cats Allowed may be the seventh book in the series, but it can easily be read as a stand-alone novel. I have not read any of the other books in the series, but I will definitely be reading them now. I liked the characters in the book (there are a lot of them) and Diesel, the cat. The mystery was interesting, but it was child's play to solve (I kept hoping for a good twist at the end, but there was not one). I give No Cats Allowed 4 out of 5 stars (I liked it). I look forward to the next book in A Cat in the Stacks Mystery! I received a complimentary copy of No Cats Allowed from NetGalley in exchange for an honest evaluation of the book!
