Eighth graders Leta Robles, Scott Hudson, Maria Flores, and Guy Trevino want a future that offers hope. Their dreams will be dashed if their low reading scores do not improve, because they'll be forced to take a schedule of classes for low achievers when they enter high school. The children see the hopelessness of life in Tracktown and want no part of it in the future. The only way out is through a decent education. But so far they haven't gotten that at P.S.11, because of a never ending parade of substitute teachers who often left before even getting to know the names of the children or their needs. The children are hungry for skills and knowledge, and understand what must be done. They won't be stopped until they succeed. Leta and Scott lead the way. What the children want most of all are teachers who care about them and have the talent to help them achieve their goals. Now, finally, they have those teachers
