She slowly got up and went to the kitchen to make lunch. I made sure she was in the other room before allowing myself a rare smile. My plan worked! She must have read the diary and now is concerned that unless she becomes intimate with me again, I’ll probably kill myself!
The relief and elation were so strong that it took a while for me to feel guilty about manipulating her feelings yet again. But really, what choice did I have? Was I supposed to just go through life without receiving any affection or physical gratification? Everyone else in the world was getting some, why not me?
The next day, after reading the Sunday paper in the living room while I watched some movie, she threw it down on the floor and sighed.
“So, how are you feeling this morning, Julian?”
“Okay. It seems to be getting a little better every day. Last night I slept right through for the first time in months.” That was the truth, but it wasn’t because my back was feeling better, but because I was so relieved that Mimmie was on the verge of putting the past behind us.
“Do you feel like talking?”
“Yes.” I aimed the remote at the television and turned the volume down.
“I’m assuming that you’ve been missing our sessions together?”
“Yes. More than you know.”
