A Nightingale's Tale
by Taylor Floyd
A Nightingale’s Tale, is a fantasy which takes place during the middle of a civil war fought among magical creatures in an adjacent realm to the human realm. A coven of magicians (witches and wizards) have fled their home realm to the human realm in order to escape death or imprisonment from the tyrannical King because they still practice their religion of worshiping multiple god’s instead of conforming to the new religion of one god. The story starts with the main character, Lydia Nightingale, literally fighting for a position among the elite warriors of their coven, Guardians, which has always been exclusively male. She has a desire to leave their isolated island, invisible and off the coast of Louisiana, which no one is allowed to leave unless they are a Guardian. She wins her position but with a price. She has to be a part of the reformation process of a young girl. Reformation is a barbaric tradition of torturing the “bad” out of members until they can rejoin their society “fixed”. Her own best friend, Arabella, is taken to be reformed because she is gay shortly after she joins. Believing it’s her fault her best friend has been taken, she goes on a quest to save her best friend involving the help of unlikely magical misfits in the process.
