Searching for the dao of China, the author also explores the concepts of te ('innate power') and wu wei ('effortlessness') as they apply to the ancient and modern culture, as well as to one's daily life. An award-winning playwright, Schwartz is the author of the novel "The Extraordinary Pupfish of Calaveras County," published in 2008. He lives in a redwood grove in California with his partner and their Queensland Heeler.
