Synopsis

In the future, humanity is still much itself. The modern world has expanded into outer space, and thousands of businesses and corporations possess planets instead of factories. Slavery is common. Frontier planets, barely livable, are worked only by the bravest. Titan Station, once mankind's greatest achievement, orbits Jupiter, abandoned to gangsters. New York City is a commonly known archaeological dig. The conquered universe is a political powder-keg, ready to explode on dozens of stations and planets. Meanwhile, Badger chases freedom. Magdalena Aznar chases ideals. Sabrina Trent chases the past. Digger is simply an anomaly.

This collection of stories reaches into the future one thousand years. It tells the tales of several persons, with dark and secret pasts, with only a hint of a promise of revelation. It tells of humanity in the future, how small choices matter and how small paths cross- for good or evil. Read onward for rapid space battles, deathly cost, rebellion, and mystery, but only if you care to discover danger in 3024 A.D.

Fast paced and exciting ride through the future

I loved this book. I don't usually pick up Sci-Fi titles. Actually, I commonly make an effort to avoid them. I've just never felt the need to give Sci-Fi a fair shake because I've never had an innate attraction to it. After reading, and enjoying, DES Richard's blog, I happened upon another one of his works, a piece of standalone short fiction on QuarterReads. I loved it so much I gave serious consideration to finding and begging him on social media to continue that story so I had more of it to read. (I didn't. Should have, but didn't.) So that is how I got here. I thought since I loved that first short so much I should try this out. Seeing that it is also a series of short stories, I figured this would be a good way to dip my toe in the pool of sci-fi. I could test the water with these shorter stories and back out if it didn't prove to my liking. NOT POSSIBLE. This book sneaks in behind you and pushes you into the deep end. There is no toe dipping here. Short stories or not, you are immersed in the word that is, 3024AD. And though I found myself now fully submerged in a sci-fi world 1000 years in the future I was not drowning unpleasantly. It is just that, a world you can immerse yourself in. Stories you can get lost in and not care if you find your way out of. DES Richard's vivid, but concise style of writing lends beautifully to this short story format. It doesn't take him many words to paint a scene you can see and move through with the characters. Even for someone that doesn't read this genera I never felt lost, or like I couldn't quite picture it. Very much the opposite. That writing style, along with the story format makes for a fun and fast paced ride. You will not be board, I promise. It is filled with treachery, piracy, mystery, love, lunacy, epic battles, and all things needed for adventure. Each new story promises a new ride. I can't wait to read more from this author, long or short form, I have high hopes.

    Amazing!

I try every book I can. This was no exception. It's not my usual genre. However I was immediately taken in and the details took me away! These stories were so well written I could imagine myself there! I could see this as a TV series or movie!
